The host (the buccaneer) and the co-host (the black sheep) wanted a logo for their podcast, “The Buccaneer and Black Sheep Experience”. The buccaneer represents the outlaw seeking liberation and the black sheep represents the everyman seeking belonging. Our brief was to create unique brand identities for individuals as well as organizations particularly using the Jungian archetypes. The logo had to be edgy and not conventional.

We know that brand recognition is a powerful factor for any creative business, and logo takes a big part in that. Before we begin our process to create new faces for the brand we carefully do our research and find the right ingredients to make the recipe a unique one. Other than the very usual podcast logos, we wanted this design to reflect its own elements.

After examining the Jungian archetypes, we wanted to reflect on the boldness of each character. But where the Buccaneer and Black Sheep find themselves represented in one as Yin and Yang represented inequality within their own unique differences. We played around with this idea and created a logo form where it shows an energetic and also modernized way of very well-aged archetypes. We liked the idea of using playing cards, which gave us the flexibility to split the card and have the opposite characters illustrated. We showed the tension between them in two ways - the first was by having them face opposite directions and the second in color. While the black sheep is on a dark background with black hair, the buccaneer is on a light background with fairer hair. We also combined this design by using a modern font family where it can be read easily and is much bolder and has its own philosophy underneath the brand’s essence.

Each logo should communicate something. One smart symbolic element in a logo design can express everything, like in this one. We wanted to design something quite simple and tell its own story with smart iconography. Such a dimension where each character represents their own self in a much more classical way separately.

e.t. Design Studio delivered a creative design. They were willing to do multiple changes and responded promptly to requests. A pleasure to work with.
